Speeding violation; first ever; would it affect my insurance?
I have just had a speeding ticket issued to me last week. I was in a 50 zone driving at 72 kms. I have appealed my ticket, based on the Police Officer’s advice. This is my only speeding violation. Would this cause an increase in my car insurance, due to Demerit points? I have never been to court before and feel apprehensive. I have not received a court date as yet. Any advice?

The way your question is worded tells me you are not in the US. I can answer for my country but it might be different for you. In USA a speeding conviction will cause your insurance to increase if the insurance company finds out about it. Most of the time they won’t know unless you tell them. The rate increase lasts for 3 years. If you don’t want a rate increase it is best not to shop for new insurance when it’s time to renew. Simply pay your premiums as the bills are due and keep your mouth shut unless. If the insurance company questions you, don’t lie. That would be fraud, a criminal offense.

I know exactly how you feel. I thought I was going to have a nervous breakdown when I got my first (and only!) speeding ticket. Whatever you do, don’t plead Guilty With An Explanation. Just plead Not Guilty. Traffic court isn’t too bad. You won’t be sitting with murderers and child rapists. And judges generally look old and kindly like grandfathers and grandmothers…. I hope yours does;-) The worse that can happen is that you’ll have to pay the same fine you would’ve paid if you hadn’t gone to court.

My ticket did increase my insurance premiums. Insurance companies are always looking for reasons to increase their profits. I got one point from the state and had to get another cheaper policy for a couple of years. That made me nervous, too, but everything turned out OK. I don’t understand how people can get one ticket after another and stay calm about it. The hassles of my one ticket were enough to last me a lifetime.

It will depend on your insurance company, but yes, a first time speeding violation can result in increase in your insurance.
Many insurance companies access your driver’s abstract each renewal time, so they can find out about it easily, but usually not until you renew.

It never hurts to fight a ticket. And traffic court is pretty laid back. Do some research or contact a lawyer who specializes in these cases. It may be worth the money in the longrun.

Go to court and plead not guilty. You likely will get a reduced fine (Mine was significantly reduced $132 ticket down to $27!)…yes it will affect your insurance.
